Everything you need to know about categories

Simple Categories

Categories are how you group your reading materials with read-it-later.com. By default we have created two categories (Personal and Work) for you, but you can create as many different categories as you like. Some of our users have as many as 20 different categories, while others stick with just the two original defaults. Some other examples might be: Humor, Gardening, News, Health, Project <insert name here>, etc.

Pulling links from 3rd party services

One of the more often used features of read-it-later.com is its ability to pull in links to read from third party bookmark services such as del.icio.us and ma.gnolia.com. You can turn this feature on when creating a new category. When creating a new category simply:

  1. Click on the 'Show Bookmark Service Options'
  2. Pick the bookmark service you want to associate with this category
  3. Enter your username and password for THAT bookmark service ( NOT your read-it-later.com username/password )
  4. Pick a unique tag for read-it-later.com to pull from. For example, you might begin using the tag 'rl-gardening' in del.icio.us and have that associated with your 'Gardening' category here at read-it-later.com
  5. Click 'Add Category' to save your changes

Once you have the category created and associated to your bookmark service account, the system will begin scanning periodically for new links you have added with that tag. Please note it can take as much as a hour before newly added links show up in your read-it-later.com account.

It should also be noted that just because you have associated a category with a particular service and tag combination, it does not mean that you cannot add links into that category manually or via the bookmarklet.
